We’ve been watching Haven on Netflix. I’m really enjoying it, but I realized something.

The sexy men of Haven being sexy.

The downside of watching a show that’s over is that you have to watch it alone. Of course, I don’t mean alone alone. I’m watching with the Kid and KPD. But I was sitting at work today thinking about how I can’t wait to find out what happens next, and I realized, I can’t really talk to anyone about it. I can’t post my musings on Facebook. I can’t make a killer meme and send it out into the world. If I buy a “Team Pancakes” t-shirt*, maybe someone will know what it means, but nobody will strike up a conversation about which guy Audrey will choose. They know how Audrey ended up because they watched it already.

When I was growing up, you had to watch what was on, more or less when it was on. Sure, you could videotape it (if you could set the timer on your VCR), but if you did that, you wanted to watch as soon as you had a chance, because otherwise someone would spoil the episode. Now, we all have to watch what we say about everything because we might spoil something for someone else. And we have no real way of knowing who is watching what, when.

Of course there are a lot of upsides, binge-watching not least among them. As a parent, it’s amazing that I can control almost everything the Kid watches, because nothing is ever “just on.” And we watch a lot less crap than we used to.

But I miss that community feeling of watching something all at the same time.

*I’m totally Team Pancakes.
