Almost two weeks ago now, we brought home an adorable hedgehog named Spike. It’s been a bit of an adjustment. For the first week, he lost his friendly nature because he was adjusting to our house. He seemed scared all the time, either rolled into a ball, or pooping on me. But now he has warmed up again and we have the hedgehog we planned on getting.

Spike the Hedgehog: freaking adorable

Spike the Hedgehog: freaking adorable

Hedgehog care is not for the faint of heart. Baby hedgehogs poop a lot. And their poop is not like rodent poop. It’s like poop. So that’s one thing to deal with. And hedgehogs are nocturnal, so mostly when we’re around, he’s sleeping. I’m trying to move his sleep cycle up just a little bit so he wakes up before we go to bed. Hopefully that will work, but for now, it’s working okay to just wake him up after dinner and play with him a bit. He goes back to sleep after that, which might be because he’s still growing (he’s two months old) or it might just be too early for him. We’ll see.

We’re getting him used to his carrier, too, in the hopes that he can come downstairs and hang out with the family while we watch TV in the evenings. So far, our dog has been going nuts when he sees Spike. But we’ll keep trying, giving Harpo treats and playing with him whenever the hedgehog comes out. Hopefully, they’ll make peace.

So, now we’re adjusting, and I’ll be able to post intermittent updates and adorable photos and videos. Watch this space!
